Hockeyroos ace Ashleigh Nelson netted Australia’s vital third goal in a 3-2 win over World Champions Argentina in the second of three Tests in Perth on Monday evening. The 26 year old West Australian’s goal earned the Hockeyroos their first win over Argentina since April 2011, when she again was the winning scorer in a 1-0 win in Sydney.

The Hockeyroos hit the ground running with three goals inside the opening quarter of the match, with Argentina’s Carla Rebecchi retaliating just once before the break before setting up a tense finish with a late goal from close range.

Adam Commens, Hockeyroos Head Coach, was pleased with the result and how his side had improved on their first Test performance. “It was a really positive performance,” said Commens. “I thought the girls made good progress from the first game to the second. We executed circle play very well, particularly in the first half. I thought we coped with the challenge that Argentina threw at us; we knew that they were going to come at us hard and they did but we created some chances of our own. We were probably unlucky not to score a couple of times in the second half. It was a really positive performance and great to get a win against the word number two side.”

Queenslander Kirsten Johnson’s second minute penalty corner goal gave the Australian women the perfect start and things got even better ten minutes later when Melbourne’s Claire Messent converted a team move for 2-0.

A good save prevented Australia from going further ahead a minute later and from it Argentina broke upfield to where Rebecchi halved the deficit, finishing from close range. The Hockeyroos refused to back off, however, and when Nelson fired home low into the bottom corner with her back to goal in the 17th minute the two goal margin was restored.

That’s how it stayed until late in the second half, in part thanks to good defending from a series of Argentinian penalty corners and a number of point blank saves from goalkeeper Rachael Lynch. The Hockeyroos themselves had chances, including a penalty corner that was tipped over the crossbar, before Rebecchi lifted the ball high into the goal from close range to set up a tight finish.

Commens added,  “It was great to expose a number of new players and tonight we saw them adapt to the speed of the game. I was really pleased with how we progressed from game one to game two and will be looking to make a similar progression to game three.”

The Hockeyroos’ third and final Test against Argentina takes place on Tuesday at 7pm AWST / 10pm AEDT.
