Hockey Australia announces blockbuster 2024 National Championships calendar

Published Wed 28 Feb 2024

Hockey Australia is pleased to announce its line-up of 2024 National Championships events dates, in what is continuing to shape up as a stellar year for hockey.

Hockey Australia’s National Championships suite of events includes Under 14s, Under 16s, Under 18s, Under 21s, Indoors, Country and Women’s and Men’s Masters, with the events taking place throughout the year right across the country. All age group events will be streamed live and on demand at livehockey.com.au.

Hockey Australia Chief Events Officer Simon Butterly says the events show just how widespread hockey is across the country, providing a strong pathway and a safe and inclusive community for young and old.

“The National Championships together provide a robust calendar of hockey events offering something for everyone, no matter what their age, ability, or location, whether it’s a kid who has moved on from Hookin2Hockey, a teen wanting to continue their hockey pathway or a Masters player wanting to stay fit and healthy.

“None of the National Championships events would be able to take place without the ongoing, dedicated support of local and state Governments.

“In addition, the support and commitment from each of our State and Territory Member Associations is critical in ensuring the success of these events. We are grateful for the hard work they do in hosting events and preparing their teams for these critical national events.”

The 2024 hockey calendar hit off earlier in January, with 122 teams across 5 divisions descending on Canberra for the Hockey Australia Indoor National Championships.

The next National Championships are set to take place on the 13th – 20th March with Newcastle, NSW gearing up to host hockey’s highly anticipated blue ribbon national event, the Australian Under 21 Championships.

Next, the Under 16 National Championships descend on Tasmania from April 4 – 11, with the event proudly supported by the Department of State Growth through Events Tasmania.

Hockey kicks off in New South Wales again in June, when Sydney welcomes the Women’s Masters from June 28 – July 6.

Both the U21 National Championships and the Women’s Masters Championship are proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination
NSW.

It’s a huge month in July, when the U18 National Championships hit the Gold Coast, proudly supported by Experience Gold Coast and Tasmania once again plays host to the Men’s Masters Championship.

This year’s calendar also sees the newly redeveloped Goulburn Regional Hockey Centre welcome the 2024 Country Championships for the very first time from the 3rd – 10th August. Mayor Peter Walker of Goulburn Mulwaree Council sees it as a fantastic opportunity for the city to shine as a premier sporting destination.

“We're not only excited about the event itself but also the positive impact it will have on our local economy,” Walker said.

“Visitors will get to experience our history and heritage, as well as enjoy our diverse range of eateries. We're immensely proud to be a part of this incredible occasion.”

The 2024 National Championships events calendar concludes with the Under 14 Championships taking place in Perth, the home of Hockey Australia’s High-Performance unit, from the 29th September – 5th October.

“The WA Government is proud to support the Under 14 National Championships as the next generation of hockey talent takes to the pitch at our high-performance facilities,” WA Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA said.

“Mass participation events like these championships are an important part of the state's tourism strategy, as they create a time-specific reason for athletes and their supporters to visit Western Australia for the event, and then extend their stay to explore the state.”
