Hockey Australia Indoor Championships set to ignite monumental year of Hockey

While the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos prepare for the fast-approaching Paris Olympic Games next year, a cohort of Australia and New Zealand’s best Indoor Hockey players are heading to Canberra for a medal run of their own.

The Hockey Australia Indoor Championships will take place in Canberra from January 3 to 25 in 2024 in what will be a month-long showcase of the indoor, six-a-side version of hockey. With 72 teams comprised of over 1000 players and team staff heading to the capital for the tournament, it is a great opportunity for Canberrans to experience the speed and excitement of one of Europe’s most popular indoor sports.

Teams come from across Australia and will compete in Open, Under 21, Under 18, Under 15, & Under 13 age groups. This year, the event will be further bolstered with Hockey New Zealand sending Under 21 Men’s and Women’s squads to test their mettle against Australia’s up and coming talent for the first time ever.

“Australia has a strong Indoor Hockey community – the Indoor Championships present a fantastic opportunity for New Zealand teams to access high-level competition, while our developing athletes get a taste of international competition” – said Hockey Australia Chief Events Officer Simon Butterly.

“The JDH Hockey One League Finals proved that Canberra and Hockey ACT are more than capable of hosting electrifying hockey, so we’re looking forward to the spectacle that the summer event promises to be”.

The Open Division begins proceedings, doubling as a selection event for Australia’s National Senior Squads. National Junior and Emerging Squads will also be selected from the U21 and U18 age groups.
