David Bell (OAM)

Hockey Australia is delighted to announce that David Bell OAM has been elevated to Hockey Legend status, recognising his exceptional achievements as a player, captain and coach, and his far-reaching influence on the development of Australian hockey.
One of the nation’s most accomplished players, Bell (known as ‘Dibsy’ by all of his peers), enjoyed a remarkable international career spanning more than a decade, during which he was selected to represent Australia at three Olympic Games (1976, 1980 and 1984), four World Cups (1975, 1978, 1982 and 1986) and eight Champion Trophy Tournaments (between 1978 to 1986).
He earned 186 international caps and became renowned for his technical skill, tactical intelligence and calmness under pressure. A highlight of his playing career came in 1976, when he helped Australia secure a silver medal at the Montreal Olympic Games.
In 1984 Bell assumed the captaincy of the National Men’s Team, leading Australia through a defining era that included winning the 1986 World Cup in London. His leadership—built on poise, clarity and a formidable understanding of the game—was instrumental in elevating the team’s performance and setting new standards for Australian hockey. Throughout his career, Bell also excelled at the annual Champions Trophy Tournament, finishing on the podium in every edition he contested.
Following his retirement from playing, Bell transitioned seamlessly into coaching and high-performance leadership. As Head Coach of the Hockeyroos from 2001 to 2004, he guided the team with the same tactical precision and strategic insight that characterised his playing days. His tenure included the 2004 Athens Olympics with international success, most notably winning the Champions Trophy in 2003 in Sydney.
Bell’s influence extended beyond results. He was admired worldwide for his ability to read the game, his innovative coaching philosophies and his dedication to improving the sport at every level. His impact on athletes, fellow coaches and the broader hockey community has been profound, helping shape Australia’s high-performance systems for years to come.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Australian sport, Bell was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1987 and inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004. His elevation to Hockey Legend status acknowledges a lifetime of excellence, leadership and service to the game.
David Bell’s legacy is defined not only by the medals he won, but by the generations of athletes and coaches he inspired. His elevation to Hockey Legend status is a fitting tribute to one of the most respected figures in Australian hockey history.
