Australian team announced for 2023 Indoor Women’s World Cup

The Australian Indoor Women’s Team for the 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup has been named following successful selection camps in Brisbane.

The FIH Indoor World Cup 2023 will be held in Pretoria, South Africa in February.

Australian Women’s Indoor Hockey Head Coach Mark Sandhu announced the team of 12 athletes and two travelling reserves, 11 of which have represented Australia previously.

“This is a strong team that combines experience with up and coming talent to give us the best chance of success at the World Cup,” said Sandhu.

“The selection process has been difficult considering the need to pivot to cater for the World Cup being brought forward.

“It has taken two selection camps to narrow the squad down from 34 to 12. The quality and depth of the squad is the best it has ever been which made the final stage of selection extremely tough.”

Three players in the team – Elizabeth Duguid, Emma McLeish and Madeleine Murphy have experience of competing in an Indoor Hockey World Cup.

McLeish will make a record fourth World Cup appearance in Pretoria whilst Duguid and Murphy have been selected for their second World Cup campaigns.

The team also features a set of siblings with New South Wales based sisters Caitlin (pictured above) and Erin Burns both selected.

Sandhu commended the Indoor Advisory Group and the national selectors across the country who have been integral in assisting in the selection process.

All athletes in the World Cup Squad are set to attend the 2023 Australian Indoor Championships in January ahead of the World Cup that begins on 5 February.
