COVID strikes NT U18 Women’s Team

Published Sat 09 Apr 2022

The Northern Territory Women’s Team’s participation at the current Hockey Australia U18 Championships in Cairns has ended prematurely due to COVID.

Four members of the team returned positive COVID-19 tests resulting in the majority of the group being defined as close contacts under Queensland Public Health guidelines.

As such, those defined as close contacts must isolate until Friday 15 April, meaning the team will miss the remainder of the tournament.

Hockey Australia (HA) will continue to support and work with the team and Hockey NT as they navigate isolating away from home.

As per Tournament Regulations, HA will proceed with the relevant protocol to continue the championships under circumstances in which a team is no longer able to participate due to COVID-19 and public health requirements.

The protocol is as follows:

  • 15.3.1. A team that cannot continue in the tournament due to a COVID19 related issue is deemed to have withdrawn from the competition at that stage.
    • 14.1. During the pool matches a team that is either disqualified or refuses to play or fails to complete a match is deemed to have withdrawn from the competition.
      • 14.1.1. If a team so withdraws from the competition:

• Any matches it has played until then, as well as all the matches it has still to play, will be recorded as a 5-0 loss.

  • 15.3.2. If a team so withdraws from the competition individual statistics (goal scoring) will not be removed.
  • 15.3.3. For the purpose of determining classification matches, all teams ranking below the withdrawn team will be moved up one place.
  • 15.3.4. Statistics for the team and individual player scoring statistics will not be removed for all matches played.

The NT Women’s Team had played three matches (against, Victoria Development, NSW State and WA Black), losing all three.

Schedule changes will be made by the Tournament Director and distributed later today to avoid match play in the hottest parts of the day.

Participants are asked to remain diligent with COVID-19 Safety Measures and Public Health Guidelines, monitor for symptoms, and isolate and test at the first sign of any symptoms.
