The Hockeyroos have fought until the final seconds to secure a dramatic 4-4 draw against Chile at the FIH Hockey World Cup, keeping their tournament hopes alive in a thrilling encounter played in wet conditions.
In a match that swung repeatedly throughout the second half, Australia found themselves trailing for the first time with just minutes remaining before Mariah Williams struck with 30 seconds on the clock to salvage a crucial point.
The opening quarter was a tight affair as both sides adjusted to the difficult conditions. Australia earned the only penalty corner of the term but were unable to convert, while opportunities at both ends failed to trouble the scorers as the teams went into the first break locked at 0-0.
Australia thought they had found the breakthrough in the second quarter when a penalty corner broke down and Alice Arnott lifted the ball into the back of the net.
However, the goal was called back after the umpire ruled the ball had struck the body of Williams earlier in the phase, denying the Hockeyroos the opener.
Australia continued to push and eventually got their reward late in the half.
Another penalty corner breakdown fell to Amy Lawton, who fired towards goal before Courtney Schonell produced the decisive touch to beat the Chilean defence and hand Australia a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Chile emerged firing after the main break and needed less than three minutes to level the scores, setting the stage for a frantic second half.
Australia quickly responded when Steph Kershaw was brought down by the Chilean defence, resulting in a penalty stroke. Abi Wilson stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to restore Australia's advantage at 2-1.
The Hockeyroos were then reduced to 10 players when Williams was shown a yellow card, leaving Australia a player down for five minutes.
Chile took full advantage early in the final quarter, removing their goalkeeper to introduce an additional field player while Australia were still shorthanded. After a messy passage inside the attacking circle, Chile found the back of the net to make it 2-2.
The drama continued when Australia earned another penalty corner following a strong challenge inside the attacking 25.
Claire Colwill stepped up and converted to thrust the Hockeyroos back into the lead at 3-2 with just over eight minutes remaining.
But the advantage lasted barely a minute.
Chile responded with a penalty corner variation of their own to level the match at 3-3 with a little over seven minutes left on the clock.
The momentum then swung firmly Chile's way when a shot on goal struck Kaitlin Nobbs on the shoulder and a penalty stroke was awarded. Chile converted from the spot to take the lead for the first time in the match at 4-3.
Australia threw everything forward in the dying minutes, earning another penalty corner only to be denied by the Chilean defence.
With two minutes remaining, goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram was taken off as the Hockeyroos introduced an additional field player in a last-ditch attempt to find an equaliser.
The gamble paid off.
In stunning fashion, Williams found a way through the Chilean defence and snuck the ball over the line with just 30 seconds remaining, sparking celebrations as Australia dragged themselves back to 4-4.
There was no time for either side to find another breakthrough, with the Hockeyroos securing a point from the most dramatic match of their World Cup campaign.
