Queensland Maroon do the double at Australian U15 Championships

Published Wed 13 Apr 2022

Queensland is celebrating after three of the state’s teams took home medals, including two gold, on the final day of the 2022 Hockey Australia U15 Championships in Newcastle.

Queensland Maroon won both the Boys and Girls deciders, while Queensland Gold’s Boys Team claimed the Bronze medal in a thrilling shootout victory over New South Wales Lions after scores were level at full time.

Western Australia Gold’s Boys and Girls teams both won the Silver medals, with New South Wales Stars edging out Queensland Gold for third place in the Girls competition.

A 4th minute goal from Harper Kearnan gave WA Gold the dream start in the Boys Final but it was all one way traffic after that as a brace from Cody Hale triggered Queensland Maroon to run out 5-1 winners.

The Girls Final was in the balance until the tournament’s leading goal scorer, Lily Punch scored twice in the second quarter. Kara Bradley then sealed the 3-0 result in the 49th minute.

In the Boys Bronze Medal Match, Queensland Gold came from behind twice to force a shootout before substitute goalkeeper Nicholas Searle proved the hero, keeping out four of five NSW attempts in the shootout.

Anneliese Cullen’s 45th minute goal proved the difference in a tight Girls Bronze Medal Match to ensure New South Wales did not leave the championships empty handed.

A total of 178 goals were scored across the 42 matches in the Girls Championships, 17 of those coming from the stick of Punch who finished six goals clear of teammate Bradley as the tournament’s top goal scorer. Western Australia Gold’s Georgia Hiskins was named Girls Player of the Tournament.

There were a whopping 223 goals scored in the Boys competition with 30 players getting on the score sheet. South Australia’s Bryce Hammond led the tally with an impressive 17 goals including nine from penalty corners. He was named Boys player of the Tournament.
