Kookaburra #252

Hockey Australia pays tribute to Michael Nobbs, Kookaburra #252, an Olympian, distinguished coach and one of the most influential figures in Australian hockey, who has passed away.

Michael Nobbs represented Australia as a defender, playing across the half-back line and at fullback, and was renowned for his reliability, fitness and professionalism. He earned 76 international caps for Australia between 1979 and 1985, scoring one goal, and was a member of one of the strongest eras in Australian men’s hockey.

At the highest level, Nobbs was an integral part of the Australian teams that competed at the 1981 Hockey World Cup in Bombay and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. While part of a generation widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest, he consistently held his place through hard work, discipline and trust earned from teammates and coaches.

At domestic level, Nobbs represented two states with distinction. He began his state career with South Australia from 1976 to 1980, playing club hockey with Sturt, before relocating to Western Australia in the early 1980s. From 1981 to 1992, he represented WA and played club hockey with UWA. Michael viewed the move to Perth as an opportunity to further his national aspirations, allowing him to regularly train alongside Australian players under national coach Richard Aggiss.

Known as an exceptional trainer, Nobbs was extremely fit, tactically sound and highly dependable. He displayed the highest standards of sportsmanship on and off the field and was widely respected as a true professional. His close-in defensive work, elimination skills and consistency under pressure made him a valued member of every team he represented.

Following his playing career, Michael continued to give back to the sport through coaching. He contributed extensively within Western Australia before taking his expertise overseas, including coaching roles in Japan and other countries, further extending his impact on the global hockey community.

Michael Nobbs was married to Lee Capes, Hockeyroo #240 and father of current Hockeyroo Kaitlin Nobbs, #411 and Jaimee Nobbs.

Michael Nobbs’ legacy spans playing excellence, coaching influence and a lifelong commitment to the game. Hockey Australia extends its deepest condolences to Michael’s family, friends, former teammates, players and all those whose lives and careers were shaped by his contribution to hockey. He will be remembered as a proud Kookaburra, a respected professional, and a servant of the sport. Forever Kookaburra #252.
