Hockey Australia has confirmed Hobart, Melbourne and Newcastle as host locations for three major 2027 Hockey Australia National Championships, headlined by the Under 21 National Championships to be held at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre from 23–30 April 2027.

Delivered in partnership with Hockey Tasmania and supported by Events Tasmania, the Under 21 National Championships will bring together the best Under 21 men’s and women’s teams from across Australia for one of the most important events on Hockey Australia’s national calendar.

The Under 21 National Championships are a key national pathway event, with national selectors in attendance throughout the tournament to assess athletes for future Australian squad and representative opportunities, including the Burras and Jillaroos programs.

The event is expected to attract up to 1,000 interstate visitors to Hobart, including athletes, team officials, umpires, technical officials, families and supporters, delivering valuable visitation and economic activity for the local community.

Hockey Australia Acting CEO David Thompson said the Under 21 National Championships were a vital part of the national hockey pathway.

“The Under 21 National Championships is one of the most important events in our national pathway, bringing together the best emerging athletes from across the country in a high-performance competition environment.

“Hobart has a strong track record of delivering major hockey events, and we are excited to return to the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre in partnership with Hockey Tasmania and with the support of Events Tasmania.

“This event provides athletes with an important opportunity to compete at national level in front of selectors, while also showcasing the strength of hockey across Australia.”

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Roger Jaensch, said the Championships were a strong addition to Tasmania’s sporting calendar.

“Hosting the 2027 Hockey Australia U21 National Championships is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Tasmania’s world-class sporting facilities and our State’s passion for sport,” Minister Jaensch said.

“We also know events like this help attract hundreds of players, families, volunteers and supporters to Hobart, providing a significant boost to local hotels, restaurants and tourism operators.

“We’re delighted to work with Hockey Australia to bring such an important event to Tasmania, and I know our passionate local hockey community will turn out in force to welcome competitors from around the country and create a memorable experience both on and off the field.”

In addition to the Under 21 Championships in Hobart, Hockey Australia has also confirmed Melbourne and Newcastle as hosts of two further National Championships in 2027.

The 2027 Hockey Australia Indoor National Championships will be held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville, Victoria, from 9–22 January 2027.

The Championships will bring together Australia’s leading indoor hockey players, coaches and officials for two weeks of national competition across the Under 14, Under 16, Under 18, Under 21 and Open age divisions. National selectors will be present throughout the event to assess athletes for Australian indoor hockey squad and representative opportunities.

The Indoor Championships are expected to attract approximately close to 2,000 visitors to Melbourne, including athletes, officials, coaches, families and supporters.

The 2027 Hockey Australia Under 16 National Championships will be held at the Newcastle International Hockey Centre from 6-13 April 2027.

The Championships will feature the nation’s leading Under 16 boys’ and girls’ teams and provide an important national competition opportunity for Australia’s next generation of hockey talent. National selectors will also be in attendance, with the event forming part of Hockey Australia’s broader pathway identification process.

Hockey Australia Chief Events Officer Simon Butterly said the three confirmed host locations would each play an important role in delivering high-quality national championship events in 2027.

“Hobart, Melbourne and Newcastle are all proven hockey locations, and we are pleased to confirm these venues for three important national championship events in 2027,” Butterly said.

“These events bring together the best athletes from across the country and provide a genuine national stage for players, coaches and officials to test themselves against their peers.

“The Under 21 National Championships in Hobart will be particularly important, with many athletes in this age group likely to be entering their prime years around the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Details of Hockey Australia’s remaining 2027 National Championships, including host locations and event dates, will be announced in the coming weeks.
