Hockeyroos fall just short of World Cup bronze in hard-fought contest

The Hockeyroos have fallen agonisingly short of a World Cup medal, going down 1-0 to Belgium in a hard-fought bronze medal match to bring their FIH Hockey World Cup campaign to a close.

Belgium started on the front foot, putting the Australian defence under pressure early as both sides looked to finish their World Cup campaigns on the podium.

The contest quickly developed into a back-and-forth battle, with neither side willing to give an inch in their final match of the tournament.

Australia’s best opportunity of the opening quarter came through Steph Kershaw, who produced a stunning run to break through the Belgian defence and find herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Kershaw looked to finish the move, but her effort went narrowly wide as the two sides headed to the first break locked at 0-0.

Belgium found the breakthrough in the second quarter, converting their first penalty corner of the match to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Hockeyroos responded strongly, beginning to string together some promising passages of play as they searched for a way back into the contest.

But the Belgian defence held firm, taking its slender 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Australia continued to push forward after halftime and found opportunities in attack, but struggled to find the final connection required to unlock the Belgian defence.

It remained an arm wrestle throughout the third quarter, with neither side able to add to the scoreboard as Belgium carried its 1-0 lead into the final 15 minutes.

With a World Cup bronze medal on the line, the Hockeyroos continued to throw everything at their opponents.

Australia earned a penalty corner midway through the final quarter and had an opportunity to draw level, but were unable to convert as Belgium continued to withstand the pressure.

With four-and-a-half minutes remaining, Australia withdrew goalkeeper Joce Bartram and introduced an additional field player, putting everything on the line in pursuit of the equaliser.

The Hockeyroos fought until the final whistle, but Belgium held on to secure the bronze medal with a 1-0 victory.

While the result brought heartbreak in the final game, it also drew the curtain on a proud World Cup campaign for the Hockeyroos, who battled their way into the final four and came within one goal of a place on the podium.
