The Hockeyroos have secured their place in the 2027 FIH Pro League after producing one of their grittiest performances of the season, stunning newly crowned champions the Netherlands with a dramatic 1-1 draw before claiming the bonus point in a 3-1 shootout victory in Wavre.
The result not only made Australia the first team to take points off the Dutch during this year's competition, but also ensured the Hockeyroos avoided relegation from the FIH Pro League. The victory confirms Australia will feature when the world's best return to the Gold Coast for the 2027 FIH Pro League season.
Needing a positive finish to their European campaign, Australia matched the world number one side from the opening whistle and were rewarded for refusing to give in, with Claire Colwill converting a penalty corner with just 27 seconds remaining to force the match into a shootout.
The Hockeyroos started brightly, creating two early scoring opportunities inside the opening three minutes and earning the first penalty corner of the contest. Australia controlled much of the opening quarter, asking plenty of questions of the Dutch defence, but were unable to find the breakthrough.
The Netherlands capitalised on one of their few opportunities late in the second quarter. After Australia turned possession over, Freeke Moes burst down the left before finding Frederique Matla, who applied the finishing touch in front of goal to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Australia continued to battle throughout a tightly contested third quarter, with chances limited at both ends as the Hockeyroos' defence stood firm to keep the contest within reach.
With time running out, the Hockeyroos mounted one final charge. After withdrawing goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram in favour of an extra field player, Australia earned a penalty corner with just 27 seconds left on the clock. Colwill stepped up under pressure and powered her drag flick into the bottom-left corner to level the scores and send the match to a shootout.
The Hockeyroos carried that momentum into the one-on-one contest, producing a composed performance to secure a 3-1 shootout victory and claim the valuable bonus point.

Colwill's standout performance earned her Player of the Match honours.
"It’s bittersweet really. We put ourselves in a really bad position throughout the whole of the Pro League, but a good end to a big building block I think for us leading into the World Cup," Colwill said.
The remarkable comeback provides the perfect finish to Australia's FIH Pro League campaign, with the Hockeyroos securing their top-flight status while handing the world champions their first dropped points of the season.
The group will now turn their attention to the FIH Hockey World Cup in August, taking confidence and momentum from a memorable finish to their Pro League campaign.
