The Kookaburras produced a disciplined and resilient performance to defeat the world number two Netherlands 2-0, while the Hockeyroos claimed a valuable point against Belgium before narrowly missing out in a shootout in Wavre.

Kookaburras stun Dutch with clinical display

The Kookaburras made the most of their opportunities and defended superbly to secure a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in a hard-fought FIH Pro League encounter.

Despite the Dutch controlling much of the possession and creating the majority of the chances, Australia's defensive structure stood firm throughout, led by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Ash Thomas.

The Netherlands threatened early, forcing Thomas into a brilliant save and earning multiple penalty corners, but it was Australia who struck first. Tim Brand opened the scoring in the 14th minute, reacting in a crowded circle to force home a penalty corner rebound and hand the Kookaburras a 1-0 advantage.

The match remained evenly poised through the second quarter, with both teams creating opportunities but neither able to add to the scoreboard before half-time.

Australia doubled its lead immediately after the break when Jeremy Hayward calmly converted a penalty stroke after a heavy challenge inside the circle.

The Dutch continued to press and enjoyed lengthy periods of attacking possession throughout the second half, but the Kookaburras' defensive unit remained resolute. Thomas repeatedly denied the Netherlands, while the Australian defence absorbed sustained pressure to protect the two-goal lead.

The victory was sealed through a determined team effort, with Thomas recognised as Player of the Match for his standout performance between the posts.

"It was just really tough out there in the heat and we tried to stick together as a team," Thomas said.

"I suppose it's good for me when a few good saves come off, but we fought really hard out there and I'm really pleased with the performance of the team."

Hockeyroos battle hard before shootout defeat to Belgium

The Hockeyroos earned a valuable point after a spirited 1-1 draw with Belgium before the hosts claimed the bonus point with a 4-2 shootout victory.

Australia was forced to respond to an early setback after Belgium converted a penalty corner inside the opening minute, with Stephanie Vanden Borre's drag flick finding the back of the net via a deflection.

The Hockeyroos responded positively and gradually worked their way into the contest, applying pressure through sustained attacking phases and creating several opportunities inside the Belgian circle.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 19th minute when Alice Arnott pounced on a rebound and fired home to level the scores after excellent lead-up play from the Australians.

The remainder of the first half was tightly contested, with both sides generating opportunities in an evenly matched battle.

The Hockeyroos continued to challenge after the break, while goalkeeper Joce Bartram produced a crucial double save in the third quarter to deny Belgium and keep the scores level.

Belgium increased the pressure in the final quarter, striking the post and creating several dangerous chances, but the Hockeyroos defence held firm. Australia nearly snatched victory in the dying moments, only for Belgium to deny a late scoring opportunity and force the match into a shootout.

The hosts ultimately prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to claim the extra FIH Pro League point, but the Hockeyroos can take confidence from another competitive performance against one of the world's leading nations.
