Kookaburras shut out England to secure fifth at World Cup

The Kookaburras have finished their 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup campaign on a high, defeating England 2-0 to secure fifth place.

In their final match of the tournament, goals from Blake Govers and Ky Willott proved the difference as Australia produced a composed performance to shut out England.

It was a tight tussle in the opening quarter, with both sides battling for control but neither able to make an impact on the scoreboard.

Chances were limited at both ends as the two sides went into the first break locked at 0-0.

Australia came out firing in the second quarter, immediately putting pressure on the England defence and earning their first penalty corner of the match.

Govers stepped up for the drag flick, firing low to the goalkeeper’s right, but the England keeper was equal to the task.

England soon earned a penalty corner of their own, with Hayden Beltz unfortunately caught in the face by a stray ball off the pads of goalkeeper Ash Thomas, forcing the Australian defender from the field.

The Kookaburras continued to push forward and earned another penalty corner, with Govers again going low to the goalkeeper’s right. His initial effort was saved before Tim Howard attempted to capitalise on the rebound, only to send his effort wide.

With just 22 seconds remaining in the half, Australia finally found the breakthrough.

Another penalty corner gave Govers his opportunity and this time he made no mistake, finding the back of the net to hand the Kookaburras a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The second half was delayed by approximately 15 minutes after lightning forced both teams from the pitch.

When play eventually resumed, the third quarter followed a similar pattern to the opening term, with the two sides going head-to-head but unable to create a decisive opening.

Australia remained in control on the scoreboard at the final break, leading 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining in their World Cup campaign.

The Kookaburras then found the crucial second goal in the final quarter.

Another Australian penalty corner was initially denied by the England goalkeeper, but Ky Willott was perfectly positioned to pounce on the rebound and fire home, doubling the Kookaburras’ advantage at 2-0.

With four-and-a-half minutes remaining, England pulled their goalkeeper in a last-ditch attempt to find a way back into the contest.

Australia’s defence stood firm, seeing out the closing stages to secure a clean sheet and a 2-0 victory.

The result sees the Kookaburras finish fifth at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, bringing their campaign to a winning end.
