Vale Stanley Noel Griffin OAM

Hockey Australia pays tribute to Stanley Noel Griffin OAM, a highly respected administrator, umpire and lifelong servant of the game, who passed away on 27 June 2026, aged 96.

A founding member and Patron of Commercial Hockey Club in Brisbane, Stan dedicated more than seven decades to the growth and development of hockey across Queensland and Australia. His contribution to the sport spanned officiating, administration, governance and event delivery, earning him the admiration and respect of generations within the hockey community.

In 1957, Stan founded the Queensland Umpires Hockey Association and served as its Secretary for approximately 20 years. He also achieved International Grade 2 Umpire status, reflecting his expertise and commitment to officiating at the highest level of the game.

While his early contributions came through umpiring, Stan became best known for his extensive administrative service. He held numerous leadership positions with Brisbane Men's Hockey and Hockey Queensland, including significant roles in the development of indoor hockey across both Brisbane and Queensland. He also served as Convenor for international hockey matches played in Queensland, helping deliver countless major events and supporting the growth of the sport at every level.

Stan's outstanding contribution to hockey was recognised with Hockey Australia's Award of Merit in 1979 before he was awarded Life Membership of Hockey Queensland in 1982. His lifelong dedication to sport and community was further acknowledged with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Hockey Australia extends its deepest condolences to Stan's family, friends and all those across the hockey community whose lives he touched. He will be remembered as one of Queensland hockey's great servants, whose remarkable legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
