The Kookaburras produced a thrilling comeback to secure a 2–2 (5–4 shootout) victory over India, claiming their first shootout win in two years after an absorbing contest.

Australia unveiled debutant Dylan Downey, who earned his first international cap in what proved to be a high-pressure encounter from the outset.

India began with intensity, applying a sharp attacking press that unsettled the Australian defence. Their pressure paid dividends in the 15th minute of the first quarter when Amit Rohidas converted from a penalty corner to give India a 1–0 lead at quarter time.

The second quarter was a tense, defensive battle with neither side able to break through. India’s structure remained disciplined, particularly in their penalty corner defence, frustrating an Australian side that continued to generate circle entries.

Jugraj Singh doubled India’s advantage in the 43rd minute of the third quarter, converting from another penalty corner to stun the Australian crowd and extend India’s lead to 2–0. Remarkably, India would finish the match with just two penalty corner opportunities converting both.

Facing a two-goal deficit, the Kookaburras lifted in the final term. Persistent attacking pressure and repeat re-awards inside the circle saw Australia earn 14 penalty corners across the match. Despite India’s resolute defence, Joel Rintala delivered when it mattered most.

Rintala struck in the 47th minute to ignite the comeback before standing tall again in the 56th minute, converting another penalty corner to level the scores at 2–2 and force a shootout.

In the one-on-one decider, Australian goalkeeper Jed Snowden proved decisive, producing key saves to secure a 5–4 shootout victory for the Kookaburras — their first shootout triumph in two years.

India’s Jugraj Singh was named Player of the Match for his influential performance and clinical penalty corner conversion.

Final Score: Australia 2 def. India 2 (5–4 SO)
Goal Scorers:
India – Amit Rohidas (PC, 15’), Jugraj Singh (PC, 43’)
Australia – Joel Rintala (PC, 47’, 56’)

A new-look Australian Hockeyroos side showed grit and promise despite falling 3–1 to China in a spirited international clash.

With four debutants in Georgie Smithers, Zali Ward, Bianca Zurrer and Alyssa Smith the Hockeyroos entered the contest with significantly less international experience.

Australia’s match-day squad combined for 342 caps, compared to China’s imposing 997, a clear indication of the challenge facing the youthful Australian outfit.

China made their experience count early. Lihang Wang opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the first quarter, capitalising on pressure inside the circle to give China a 1–0 lead at the first break.

The second quarter saw China extend their advantage. Xueling Zeng struck in the 23rd minute, before Ying Zhang converted from a penalty corner in the 27th minute to push the margin to 3–0 heading into halftime.

Despite the scoreboard, the Hockeyroos refused to retreat. Australia tightened defensively after the main break, holding China scoreless in the second half, the second consecutive match in which China have been kept off the board after halftime. The third quarter was an arm wrestle, with the Roos showing improved structure and composure.

Their persistence was rewarded in the final quarter. A sharp connection between Hannah Cullum-Sanders and Lucy Sharman saw Sharman deliver a perfectly weighted ball into the circle, where Cullum-Sanders finished clinically to give Australia a deserved goal and inject late energy into the contest.

China’s captain Li Hong was named Player of the Match, claiming her second consecutive player of the match honour following another commanding performance across the midfield.

While the result finished 3–1 in China’s favour, the match provided valuable international exposure for Australia’s emerging talent, with the debutants gaining important experience against a seasoned opponent.

Final Score: China 3 def. Australia 1

Goal Scorers:
China – Lihang Wang (11’), Xueling Zeng (23’), Ying Zhang (PC, 27’)
Australia – Hannah Cullum-Sanders (FG)
