Vale Kym Ireland – Hockeyroo #283

Wed 17 Dec 2025

It is with profound sadness that the hockey community mourns the passing of former Australian Hockeyroo and Olympian Kym Ireland, who passed away recently after a courageous battle with illness.

Ireland was a trailblazer for women’s hockey in Australia, representing her nation as the goalkeeper for the Hockeyroos at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games — the first time the Australian women’s team competed on hockey’s greatest international stage. Her performances, leadership and commitment to excellence were hallmarks of a pioneering international career that helped shape the future of the women’s game in Australia.

Following her international career, Kym remained deeply connected to the sport. She returned to her hometown of Rockhampton, Queensland, where she continued to give back to hockey as a coach and mentor, nurturing young talent and sharing her knowledge and passion with the next generation.

Kym Ireland’s legacy extends far beyond her achievements on the field. Her contribution to Australian hockey, both as an Olympian and as a lifelong servant of the game, will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.

On behalf of the Hockeyroos and Hockey Australia, we extend our sincere condolences to Kym’s family, friends and the wider hockey community during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Kym Ireland — forever a Hockeyroo.
