The Kookaburras’ 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup campaign has come to an end after a 4-2 defeat to Germany in a fast-paced, attacking contest.
Australia could hardly have asked for a better start, opening the scoring just three minutes into the contest.
Some brilliant work from Tim Brand through the top of the circle created the opportunity, with Blake Govers getting on the end of the sequence to give the Kookaburras an early 1-0 advantage.
At the other end, Ash Thomas produced a superb save from Germany’s second penalty corner of the match.
But Germany eventually found a way through, levelling the scores with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter courtesy of a stunning reverse-stick finish from Hannes Müller.
Just a minute later, the Germans struck again. A dangerous crash ball through the circle opened up the Australian defence and Germany capitalised to take a 2-1 lead into the first break.
The breakneck pace continued into the second quarter as Germany picked up where they left off.
Thomas denied the initial German effort on goal, but the rebound fell kindly for Germany, who made no mistake with the second opportunity to extend their advantage to 3-1.
With their World Cup campaign on the line, Australia refused to let the game get away from them and clawed their way back into the contest late in the half.
A crisp ball fired into the circle found Joel Rintala, who provided the finishing touch in the 30th minute to reduce the deficit to one and send the Kookaburras into half-time trailing 3-2.
After an attacking showcase in the opening half, the third quarter began as a tighter affair before Germany again found a way to extend their lead.
A penalty corner breakdown opened the door for the Germans to make it 4-2 and restore their two-goal buffer.
Australia earned their first penalty corner of the match late in the third term, opting for a variation through Nathan Ephraums, but the Kookaburras were unable to convert as Germany took their 4-2 advantage into the final break.
With Australia needing two goals to keep their World Cup hopes alive, the final quarter became a battle to break down a disciplined German defence.
The Kookaburras continued to push forward and, with six minutes remaining, made the aggressive decision to withdraw Thomas and introduce an extra field player in search of a way back into the contest.
Despite creating opportunities and throwing everything forward in the closing stages, Australia were unable to find the breakthrough as Germany held firm to secure the 4-2 victory.
The result brings the Kookaburras’ 2026 World Cup campaign to an end, with Australia bowing out after a hard-fought contest against the Germans.
