New Indigenous design for Australian Indoor, Masters and Country

Published Wed 08 Feb 2023

Representative Australian Indoor, Masters and Country teams will wear uniforms displaying specially designed Indigenous artwork that embodies the three national programs.

Designed by Kevin Bynder, each national program used various pieces of the art piece to design their new uniforms.

Bynder’s creation represents all people of Australia who choose to play hockey regardless of age, race, religion, or gender.

“Hockey brings people together for one reason and that is to have fun,” said Bynder.

“The green and gold colours represent all Australians in the sport of hockey. The eight green and gold circles represent the six Australian States and two Territories. Together they become one to represent our beautiful country.

“The bottom artwork represents the Indigenous people of our country, the song-lines which have been laid from the beginning and are still walked on today, representing the strong cultural connection that exists.

“The blue, white and green colours represent our Torres Strait Islander people and their contribution to our country…the white netting is displayed to represent their rich culture of hunting seafood.”

The middle artwork was designed by the National Programs Indigenous Design Group, which was formed in March 2022.

The Group comprised five members from Country, Masters and Indoor hockey as well as a Hockey Australia representative. Hockey Australia would like to acknowledge Naomi Lynch, Troy Williamson, Destiny Peris, Lisa Fatnowna and Jackson Willie and thank them for their contribution.

The uniforms will be first worn by Australia’s Men’s and Women’s Indoor teams at the FIH Indoor World Cup in South Africa that starts on 5 February.

Australian Country teams will wear their uniform during a Senior Tour to Singapore-Malaysia in April, while the Australian Masters will launch their uniform during the Trans-Tasman Challenge in New Zealand.

Hockey Australia is committed to reconciliation and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their contribution to hockey in Australia.
